Hopes for a 2011-12 NBA ready were crushed Monday, with the sides in the long labor fight preparing to noodle into what NBA commissioner David Stern called "a nuclear winter."
Nationwide Basketball Players Association representatives voted unanimously Monday to disallow the NBA owners' last proposal for a new collective bargaining agreement and moved to vanish their union. The association sent Stern a notice of disclaimer of interest, a trace that will reduce the union to a trade association and is expected to pave the way for an antitrust lawsuit and a potentially crave court fight.
"We arrived at the conclusion the collective bargaining alter had completely broken down, and as a result … we served a notice of disclaimer on commissioner Hard-hearted and the NBA," said Billy Hunter , who had been the union's executive director and now leads the business association. "The players feel they are not prepared to accept any ultimatums. We have negotiated in beneficial faith for over two years. The players just felt they've given enough.
